International Youth Day is observed on 12th August every year. It is a day dedicated to celebrating and highlighting the importance of young people around the world. The day aims to promote the rights and well-being of young individuals, as well as raise awareness about the challenges they face.
This day serves as a reminder of the potential, talent, and energy that young people possess. It encourages societies to invest in their development and create opportunities for them to thrive. It also advocates for the recognition of young people as valuable contributors to society and emphasizes the need to involve them in shaping a better future.So, on International Youth Day, it is important to acknowledge and appreciate the youth's efforts and contributions while also reminding ourselves of the responsibilities we have to support and nurture the next generation.
YOUTH EMPOWERMENT
To understand Youth empowerment we first need to know what is the meaning of youth, The word “Youth” is best understood as a period of transition from the dependence of childhood to adulthood independence. When youth take charge of their life its said youth.
There are six dimensions of youth empowerment; psychological, community, organizational, economic, social and cultural.
Psychological empowerment refers to an individual's enhanced intrinsic motivation. It increases employees' sense of personal control and motivates them to engage in work.
Community empowerment is the government's effort to reduce the gap between community groups toward solving socio-economic problems. It connects individuals of same categorized work together and enhance the growth of whole community.
Organizational empowerment refers to practices that encourage decentralized decision-making and fluid information sharing among employees. It enables employees to participate in decision-making activities and gives them more control and autonomy in their work roles.
Economic empowerment is the capacity of women and men to participate in, contribute to and benefit from growth processes in ways that recognise the value of their contributions, respect their dignity and make it possible to negotiate a fairer distribution of the benefits of growth.
Social Empowerment means all the sections of society in India, have equal control over their lives, are able to take important decisions in their lives, and have equal opportunities. there should not be any discrimination among gender, religion and community.
Cultural empowerment refers to the process of enabling individuals and communities to preserve, promote, and celebrate their cultural heritage and identity.
Empowering today's youth is important for their personal growth and the betterment of society as a whole.
Here are some ways to help empower them:
1. Encourage self-discovery: Encourage young people to explore their interests, strengths, and values. Help them discover their passions and set goals related to their interests.
2. Provide mentorship: Connect youth with mentors who can guide and support them in their chosen paths. Mentors can offer valuable advice, share experiences, and provide a supportive role model.
3. Foster open communication: Create an environment where young people feel comfortable expressing themselves and sharing their thoughts and ideas. Encourage active listening and engage in meaningful conversations.
4. Promote critical thinking: Encourage young people to think critically and question the world around them. Help them develop problem-solving skills and encourage them to seek different perspectives.
5. Build resilience: Teach youth to overcome challenges by emphasizing the importance of perseverance and learning from setbacks. Encourage them to take risks and embrace failure as an opportunity for growth.
6. Provide education and skill-building opportunities: Support their educational and skill development by providing access to quality education, workshops, and training programs. Help them acquire necessary skills to succeed in their chosen fields.
7. Encourage civic engagement: Encourage young people to actively participate in their communities and engage in social and environmental issues. Help them understand the impact they can have on the world and empower them to create positive change.
8. Foster a supportive network: Help young people build a network of peers who share similar goals and aspirations. By connecting with like-minded individuals, they can find support, encouragement, and collaboration opportunities.
9. Celebrate achievements: Recognize and celebrate the accomplishments and efforts of young people. Publicly acknowledge their successes to boost their confidence and motivation.
10. Be an ally: Be a supportive adult figure who listens, understands, and respects their opinions and ideas. Offer guidance, encouragement, and unconditional love throughout their journey.
Remember, empowering youth requires patience, understanding, and a commitment to their well-being. By creating a nurturing and supportive environment, you can help them unlock their full potential and thrive.
